In-Home Dog Trainingin Lexington, MA

Reward-based, in-home training on your real streets — from the Battle Green to the Bikeway.

Most Lexington dogs aren’t badly behaved. They’re under-taught in the one place it counts — the Minuteman Bikeway when a pack of cyclists comes through, the front door of a house with a long driveway and a lot to guard, a loose dog appearing on the Willards Woods trail, the sidewalk outside the Center on a Saturday. A trainer comes to your home, works with your dog on your floors, your yard and your block, and coaches you so the training holds after we leave.

Our Philosophy

We train dogs in Lexington in a way that actually works.

At Good Dog Boston, we believe a dog should be a friend and a companion, not a chore. Whether you have a young pup, an older dog or a rescue, Good Dog Boston can help them learn how to behave appropriately at home and on-the-go.

Lexington is a wonderful place to own a dog and a difficult place to train one: big yards teach a dog to patrol, conservation land teaches a dog to run, and then the Bikeway asks that same dog to walk calmly past bikes, joggers and forty other dogs. Your dog is fine at home. It is the trail and the path that turn into a battle. That is not a broken dog. That is a dog with a lot of freedom and no instructions for it.

Good Dog Boston trains dogs in Lexington the way Lexington actually works: in your home, in your yard and on your real trails and streets, using reward-based methods. We do not run a facility you drive to. We come to you, because the trailhead where your dog loses his head is where the training has to happen.

We understand that every dog is unique, and we tailor and adapt our services to ensure your success. Spanish-speaking trainers are available. Every engagement starts with a free evaluation call, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you commit.

Training that fits big yards and busy trails

Recall is the whole game in a town with this much open land. A recall that works in the kitchen and fails at Willards Woods is not a recall. We build it on a long line, at increasing distance, with real distractions, and we build a leash walk that holds on the Bikeway when the cyclists come through in a bunch. Reactivity here is usually frustration or fear, and the fix is distance, timing and a clear job to do when a trigger appears — not a firmer correction.

Where we practice in Lexington

  • The Minuteman Bikeway — long and straight through East Lexington and the Center, so passes with bikes and dogs can be rehearsed at whatever distance your dog needs.
  • Willards Woods — the town’s busiest dog-walking trails: the real test for recall and calm greetings.
  • Lincoln Park — fields and wooded loops with sightlines that let you step the difficulty up or down.
  • The Battle Green and Lexington Center — tourists, strollers and café tables for real sidewalk manners once the basics hold.
  • The Battle Road Trail at Minute Man National Historical Park — wide, leashed and predictable: good for long calm walks past people and dogs in view.

Your own street counts too. If the hard part of your day is the front door, the driveway, or the walk to the Bikeway, that is where we train.

Reactive dog · Downtown Boston

I would recommend Good Dog Boston to anyone! Our trainer Jeff was patient, kind, and extremely helpful when working with us and our dog Miley. Miley struggles with reactivity triggered by other dogs and living in downtown Boston makes avoiding other dogs nearly impossible. Jeff provided a tiered program which laid the ground work for Miley’s basic obedience and built up to working through her reactivity issues. We have already seen huge improvement in Miley’s behavior and all thanks goes to Good Dog Boston! Also shoutout to Jeff’s furry assistants: Danny, Halo, & Doctor for being the good-est boys and helping their friend Miley with her manners! Truly a 5 star experience!

Labradoodle puppy

We couldn’t be happier with our experience working with Jeff and his training program. We enrolled our labradoodle puppy in the puppy program at 5 months old, and it made a world of difference. Jeff helped us navigate and correct those early, unwanted puppy behaviors while building a solid foundation of training that’s stuck with our pup ever since. Jeff is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but he’s also clearly passionate about what he does. His approach is effective, thoughtful, and tailored—and the results speak for themselves. Our puppy is now a well-behaved city dog we’re proud to take anywhere. On top of that, Jeff is responsive, flexible, and genuinely a pleasure to work with.

Reactive adolescent spitz

We were having trouble training our adolescent spitz, who was quickly becoming quite reactive/aggressively territorial on regular walks around the neighborhood. We’re so grateful that we had the chance to work with Jeff at Good Dog Boston — though we’d read a handful of books and watched a few videos about how to work with reactive dogs, there’s nothing quite like having someone with a great deal of experience point out to you the specific tools to use and nuanced cues in your specific dog’s behavior to watch out for. Jeff was wonderful — worked with our busy schedules (and the weather), clearly excellent/fond of dogs, highly results-driven, and he gave us customized “homework” to do. Walking him is now pleasant instead of embarrassing and stressful.

Lexington dog training — common questions

Do you come to my home in Lexington?
Yes — every lesson is in your home and on your own street. That is the point: a triple-decker stairwell, a narrow sidewalk and a busy crosswalk are where your dog actually has to behave, and none of them resemble a training hall. We work in apartment hallways, lobbies and elevators as readily as in living rooms.
What does dog training cost in Lexington?
Flat pricing, quoted before you book. Puppy training is $1,199 for five sessions; adult dog obedience is $1,799 for seven. Behavior modification for reactive or anxious dogs is quoted after the free evaluation call, because the plan depends on the dog. Any travel cost for your address is confirmed on that same call, never after.
Where do you practice around Lexington?
Wherever your dog struggles — Lexington Center, East Lexington, Follen Hill, Meriam Hill, Countryside, Five Fields, Munroe. We train on the route you actually walk, at the time of day you actually walk it, not a quiet substitute for it.
Do you work with reactive dogs?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do in a city this dense. Lunging and barking on leash, guarding, fear of strangers or traffic, and separation problems are all handled through reward-based behavior modification — the cases group classes usually turn away. Tell us honestly what happens on your walks and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
How soon can we start, and do you speak Spanish?
Most families start within a week or two of the evaluation call, and a trainer calls you back within 24 hours of your enquiry. Entrenadores hispanohablantes — también atendemos en español.
