In-home dog training · Newton & Greater Boston

In-Home Dog Trainingin Newton, MA

Reward-based, in-home training on your real streets — from Newton Centre to Auburndale.

Most Newton dogs aren’t badly behaved. They’re under-taught in the one place it counts — the front door when a delivery comes, the Commonwealth Avenue carriage road on a Saturday morning, a busy pass outside the shops in Newton Centre, the trail at Cold Spring Park with five dogs in view. A trainer comes to your home, works with your dog on your floors, your driveway and your block, and coaches you so the training holds after we leave.

Our Philosophy

We train dogs in Newton in a way that actually works.

At Good Dog Boston, we believe a dog should be a friend and a companion, not a chore. Whether you have a young pup, an older dog or a rescue, Good Dog Boston can help them learn how to behave appropriately at home and on-the-go.

Newton gives a dog a lot: a yard, quiet side streets, thirteen villages with a green or a park in each. It also gives a dog a lot to guard. The classic Newton call is a dog who is a delight inside and a barking, lunging handful at the front window, on the carriage road, or the moment another dog rounds the corner in Waban or Newton Highlands. That is not a broken dog. That is a dog with a big territory and no instructions for it.

Good Dog Boston trains dogs in Newton the way Newton actually works: in your home, in your yard and on your real streets, using reward-based methods. We do not run a facility you drive to. We come to you, because the window your dog barks at and the corner where he pulls are where the training has to happen.

We understand that every dog is unique, and we tailor and adapt our services to ensure your success. Spanish-speaking trainers are available. Every engagement starts with a free evaluation call, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you commit.

Training that fits a town of villages and yards

A fenced yard is a gift and a trap: dogs who spend the day patrolling a fence line learn to react to everything that passes it, and then bring that habit onto the leash. In Newton we work on two things at once — calm at the boundary of your property, and calm in the places you actually walk, from the Comm Ave carriage road to the trails at Cold Spring and Nahanton. Reactivity here is usually frustration or fear, not aggression, and the fix is distance, timing and a clear job to do when a trigger appears.

Where we practice in Newton

  • Cold Spring Park — wooded loop trails and the off-leash area, so we can work at a distance and step closer only when your dog is ready.
  • The Commonwealth Avenue carriage road — a long, straight, predictable walk with joggers, cyclists and other dogs in view: ideal for calm passes.
  • Crystal Lake and Newton Centre — a lakeside loop for settling work, then the shops on Centre Street when it is time for busier sidewalks.
  • Nahanton Park and the Charles River — open fields, river paths and the dog area for recall and long-line practice.
  • Auburndale Park — riverside, quieter, with room to keep your dog under threshold instead of nose-to-nose.

Your own street counts too. If the hard part of your day is the front door, the driveway, or the walk to the village center, that is where we train.

Reactive dog · Downtown Boston

I would recommend Good Dog Boston to anyone! Our trainer Jeff was patient, kind, and extremely helpful when working with us and our dog Miley. Miley struggles with reactivity triggered by other dogs and living in downtown Boston makes avoiding other dogs nearly impossible. Jeff provided a tiered program which laid the ground work for Miley’s basic obedience and built up to working through her reactivity issues. We have already seen huge improvement in Miley’s behavior and all thanks goes to Good Dog Boston! Also shoutout to Jeff’s furry assistants: Danny, Halo, & Doctor for being the good-est boys and helping their friend Miley with her manners! Truly a 5 star experience!

Labradoodle puppy

We couldn’t be happier with our experience working with Jeff and his training program. We enrolled our labradoodle puppy in the puppy program at 5 months old, and it made a world of difference. Jeff helped us navigate and correct those early, unwanted puppy behaviors while building a solid foundation of training that’s stuck with our pup ever since. Jeff is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but he’s also clearly passionate about what he does. His approach is effective, thoughtful, and tailored—and the results speak for themselves. Our puppy is now a well-behaved city dog we’re proud to take anywhere. On top of that, Jeff is responsive, flexible, and genuinely a pleasure to work with.

Reactive adolescent spitz

We were having trouble training our adolescent spitz, who was quickly becoming quite reactive/aggressively territorial on regular walks around the neighborhood. We’re so grateful that we had the chance to work with Jeff at Good Dog Boston — though we’d read a handful of books and watched a few videos about how to work with reactive dogs, there’s nothing quite like having someone with a great deal of experience point out to you the specific tools to use and nuanced cues in your specific dog’s behavior to watch out for. Jeff was wonderful — worked with our busy schedules (and the weather), clearly excellent/fond of dogs, highly results-driven, and he gave us customized “homework” to do. Walking him is now pleasant instead of embarrassing and stressful.

Newton dog training — common questions

Do you come to my home in Newton?
Yes — every lesson is in your home and on your own street. That is the point: a triple-decker stairwell, a narrow sidewalk and a busy crosswalk are where your dog actually has to behave, and none of them resemble a training hall. We work in apartment hallways, lobbies and elevators as readily as in living rooms.
What does dog training cost in Newton?
Flat pricing, quoted before you book. Puppy training is $1,199 for five sessions; adult dog obedience is $1,799 for seven. Behavior modification for reactive or anxious dogs is quoted after the free evaluation call, because the plan depends on the dog. Any travel cost for your address is confirmed on that same call, never after.
Where do you practice around Newton?
Wherever your dog struggles — Newton Centre, Newtonville, West Newton, Waban, Auburndale, Newton Highlands, Chestnut Hill, Oak Hill, Nonantum, Upper and Lower Falls. We train on the route you actually walk, at the time of day you actually walk it, not a quiet substitute for it.
Do you work with reactive dogs?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do in a city this dense. Lunging and barking on leash, guarding, fear of strangers or traffic, and separation problems are all handled through reward-based behavior modification — the cases group classes usually turn away. Tell us honestly what happens on your walks and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
How soon can we start, and do you speak Spanish?
Most families start within a week or two of the evaluation call, and a trainer calls you back within 24 hours of your enquiry. Entrenadores hispanohablantes — también atendemos en español.
